He also registered a double-double (10 points, 12 rebounds) for Team Wethers. Norco’s Chine Nwanevu won the boys free-throw shooting contest and was the runner-up in the dunk contest. Contreras knocked down eight more 3-pointers en route to a game-high 28 points for Team Davis. Orange Vista’s Adrian Contreras won the boys 3-point contest, making 8 of his final 9 attempts to claim the title. Willis made two clutch 3-pointers down the stretch to help Team Galbreath secure the 78-74 win over Team Kirkland. Willis scored a game-high 20 points, 17 coming in the second half, to earn MVP honors in the girls game. If the tournament has a “group of death” this season it would be Pool H which features Great Oak (11-1-1), Mater Dei Catholic from Chula Vista (11-1) and Grand Terrace (11-2-1), all of whom were in last week’s state rankings. Norco (18-0) is the tournament’s top seed, but the Cougars could be challenged by Rio Mesa (13-0) and Crescenta Valley (13-2-1) in its two Pool A games Wednesday. The winners of each pool advance to the quarterfinals. The tournament has a new format this season, with the 24 invited teams separated into eight pools of three. All games will be played at Peralta Canyon Park in Anaheim. The prestigious tournament gets underway Wednesday afternoon and closes with the final Saturday night. The Michelle Carew Classic once again features many of the top softball teams in the state, including Inland powers Norco, Great Oak, Santiago and Grand Terrace.
